FINDING COURAGE IN GODS PRESENCE
Finding Courage in the Presence of God – A Reflection on Psalm 27
“The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?” – Psalm 27:1
There are moments in life when fear tries to grip our hearts—uncertainty, betrayal, delay, or even the overwhelming noise of the world around us. In those moments, I’ve found myself turning to Psalm 27. It has become a personal anchor in seasons of darkness and doubt.
David, the writer of this psalm, wasn’t a stranger to fear. He knew what it meant to be hunted, to be betrayed, to wait on God. And yet, in the middle of all that chaos, he makes a bold declaration: God is his light, his salvation, and his stronghold. These aren't just poetic words—they are a confession of unwavering trust.
A Bold Declaration of Faith
Psalm 27 starts with power:
“The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?”
In a world full of unknowns, David chooses to fix his eyes on what is certain—God’s presence and protection. His faith is not based on circumstances, but on the unchanging nature of God. This is a challenge to us: What would happen if we stopped looking at our enemies or our problems, and started looking at our God?
A Desire for God’s Presence
David goes on to say,
“One thing I ask from the Lord… that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.”
It amazes me that David, a warrior and a king, isn’t primarily asking for victory, wealth, or safety. His deepest desire is fellowship with God. He wants to behold His beauty and seek Him in His temple. It’s a reminder that no matter what we’re facing, the greatest source of peace is not the absence of trouble, but the presence of God.
Confidence Through the Wait
The psalm ends with an encouragement that I’ve held onto many times:
“Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart. Wait, I say, on the Lord!”
Waiting is hard. Sometimes God’s silence feels like absence, but David assures us—it’s not. Strength is found while we wait. God doesn’t leave us empty; He fills us with courage as we lean on Him day by day.
